Can someone explain why the BBC insists on calling Bombay - Mumbai, when it doesn't call Swansea - Aberdare?

perhaps its because they are 2 separate towns! I think you mean Abertawe

Depends if we like the govt or not. We like India, so it's Mumbai not Bombay. We don't like Burma so Rangoon not Yangon

Ah-ha. So we hate the WAG and don't recognise it?

Nice reference to 'world's first railway'!

more likely reason is that virtually no one in Abertawe speaks Welsh but we do use Llanelli & not Llanelly

You may use that - to me it's "Welsh place with lots of L's" :P (I jest of course)

What do BBC Welsh language programmes call Swansea, I wonder?

Well, you better find out in S4C. :)

BBC gives S4C programmes for free IIRC, and I suspect they all use Welsh place names, even like London, Liverpool and so on…

Well as no one apparently watches S4C I suppose they can call it anything they like - http://bit.ly/b5mbzo

98f4d7e3d0cc00dcbbecd556673260c6_normal @28481k

problem is twofold: 1) most of South Wales rather watch C4 than S4C even to the pt of point aerials to English transmitters

5:48AM Wed, July 28 2010

98f4d7e3d0cc00dcbbecd556673260c6_normal @28481k

2) Since digital, C4’s been more readily available than it used to be, & not many really want to watch TV in Welsh.

Don't know re Swansea, but having sat at the back of some Welsh language political interviews, they do call London 'Llundain'.

I think your making that up. Either that or it's just their accents.

Welsh speaking politicians are usually quite proud of their Welsh speaking abilities so would use Welsh as most as they can

Still doesn't explain why we don't refer to Swansea as Abertare.

Try working for one who is first language Welsh. They don't take much pride in their English-speaking abilities...

5:58AM Wed, July 28 2010

98f4d7e3d0cc00dcbbecd556673260c6_normal @28481k

Because Abertawe is NOT the English name of the city, whilst Mumbai is what’s it’s called officially (w/lots of grumbling)

Is there a list of comedy celtic names for English places anywhere?

5:58AM Wed, July 28 2010

Welsh, unlike Irish, has still got quite a lot of 1st lang speakers who only learn English at school…

Here: http://is.gd/dOi3f It's a good guide to where used to be important. Winchester gets a Welsh name, for example.
