Are you managing it yourself, or doing through c-panel? Do you have a plugin installed that is over-writing it?

managing myself, and as far as I know no plugins should overwrite it. It ran fine in dev for months.

Bits get snipped out making mismatched tags, so I get a 500 on page loads.

I would try deleting it, copy your stuff to a new one, chmod 444. See what happens.

It was 644 when it corrupted this last time. :(

644 still has write access, 444 is read only.

yeah, but it's still disturbing that 644 let it happen, AND that something is trying to do it.

Then something within your install is trying to write to it. I've not once had that problem with DH after 7 or so years..

I've just had the same problem. A couple of line-feeds were added at the start of the .htaccess file and one was removed: # BEGIN WordPress<IfModule mod_rewrite.c> I raised a ticket and got a reply some 10 hours later telling me about the htaccess corruption. This would have been rather hard to find unless it's something they see often. I don’t have the interest or the experience to fiddle with htaccess. I had not made recent changes to plugins or anything else for that matter.
