I thought that might be the case but seems strange. Would have thought the #F1 team would have gone HD. Maybe next season!

Is the broadcasting supplied locally? i mean BBC don't send gear/ops to each race? Maybe that has something to do with it?

No, the BBC use the #F1 feed which mentioned is not in HD.
