yes it does. It's a trait of the DSLR form factor. Even though it's not weather sealed it will still overheat.

In a warm environment like the beach, 15-20 minutes, what we do is film for 10 or 15 and let it rest

While recording as a B-cam on an interview in A/C it lasted 42 minutes (in 12 minute steps) before needing a 3 minute break.

I haven't used it for timelapse, but I have used the 5d for 7 hours on timelapse, so it shouldn't be a problem.
