Never heard of it, but folk names can vary HUGELY. Does it look like mint? There are chocolate mints.

Whoa. From the picture it looks like some kind of anthurium. Which will NOT survive outside in your climate.

not mint. Has waxy flowers with big spike coming out. Large leaves.

Generally, tropicals require less water than you think. Overwatering is the main way they get dead as house plants.

They're part of a HUGE group of plants thought to be native to Hawaii, but are in fact S and C American.

They're not very closely related, but they're not native to Hawaii though most think they are.
