Yeah, I think pretty much every sql db does, so there must be a good reason.

My concern biggest with riak is this: If I'm only querying an hour's worth of data, I dont wanna do random reads across many hosts

you don't want to change your shard key, try to pick a good one up front. changing shard key is manual, and must copy all data
