I think mysql does that too.

Yeah, I think pretty much every sql db does, so there must be a good reason.

& there you have 1 reason we r switching to #mysql. take dbs out the pool for alters w/ master-master replication

Oh that's smart. Why can't postgres do that?

Lol, can't tell if you're trololololling or not, but we have just removed the joins to our major tables so we'll be eval'ing nosqls

totally trolling. That's too bad, I'll miss your award-winning series of #yessql tweets. Put me down as a vote for #riak

My concern biggest with riak is this: If I'm only querying an hour's worth of data, I dont wanna do random reads across many hosts

Basically, I want range scans that take into account data locality.

got it. sounds like my new database would be perfect for you http://t.co/w3ebtlt7 you don't need it this decade do you?

Just use The Cloud, your db will be production-ready in no time.

#mongodb sharing does ranges efficiently (depending on your shard key) -- and no ALTER necessary :) cc

Interesting, I like the idea of a shard key. What's the process like when you change the shard key?

you don't want to change your shard key, try to pick a good one up front. changing shard key is manual, and must copy all data
