Why does Outlook 2010 have to pop up a dialog to tell me it's deleting a single email message?

My Outlook doesn't. Maybe slow Exchange or IMAP server link? Or huge PST file?

IMAP swerver link is fine for other clients on the network... could be a PST issue though.

Outlook should only prompt you to confirm a delete if you are permanently deleting the item. Sending the item to the Deleted Items folder (a normal delete) should not prompt. If you want to turn the prompt off for a permanent delete, then click File > Options > Advanced > Other and uncheck the option to confirm deletes.
