Can anyone tell me why Google's New Privacy policy is troubling? I kinda get it, but it doesn't seem as drastic as others are making it out.

I've been wondering this, too. Seeing lots of msg from ppl clearing Google data. Maybe there is upside 4 us to unified policy?

Found an article that helps make sense. Basically, Google is aggregating its data from across platforms: http://t.co/Fyzsf1kJ

ie will a unified policy make the info I receive more relevant to fill my need? Will data sharing make it easier for me to filter?

the clarity seems positive - only downside seems 'filter bubble' related, but that has less to do with privacy.

thanks for the article. Still, it mentions concerns, but the concerns aren't articulated well.

I guess 1 downside is more targeted ads based on behaviours on other Gogle platforms ie) Gmail ads based on what u watch on YouTube

I'm not sure what the fuss is all about either.

...and building of a more "complete" profile of me to make me even more attractive to advertisers.

Yes you should be concerned about Googles new privacy policy Alec http://t.co/HI123Lsh http://t.co/1HpoWxuN hope this helps

what is mentioned in that article has essentially always been a concern - I don't feel the combining services makes much different.

Fde9ba7b6658ac467d1dfb65e389cc60_normal @courosa

I guess that's the part I am trying to get-Google search history has always been there, but how does combo make it that much worse?

and thanks for the article.

thanks for helping me think that out.

it consolidates all of your data from disparate sources into one data source. They utilize it to data mine much more effectively

12:25PM Thu, March 01 2012

Head_normal @ryanholota

Its not troubling. People just look for conflict.

the only thing is, I've always considered google (youtube, docs, search, etc.) to just be one entity - think why its not shocking

I've been wondering the same & weighing it out in my mind as well, esp after reading this article http://t.co/W2KkCcTX

059c2eee5a09f619adcd8788fdb400f9_normal @gferrie Saanichton, BC

I guess that's the rub. Google purchased YouTube & other services. Now they are all aggregated in one common data source

Ctl_mark_normal @uofr_ctl Regina, SK

True. My guess: concern=Google knows I email Mom, I follow Wil Wheaton and I searched for fabric paint. And can put it together.

12:29PM Thu, March 01 2012

Fde9ba7b6658ac467d1dfb65e389cc60_normal @courosa

yet, i'd still rather have Google mine my data vs. my Government.

059c2eee5a09f619adcd8788fdb400f9_normal @gferrie Saanichton, BC

if you have all your data consolidated in 1 source data mining can be a powerful tool to drive your advertising business

So now Google is gathering info together, building a picture of who I am. I am no longer a totally anonymous user (always illusion)

it's not as bad as they make it out to seem. in a lot of ways it's better than the old policy.

059c2eee5a09f619adcd8788fdb400f9_normal @gferrie Saanichton, BC

the advertising you will see will be an aggregate of everything you do in the Google world, potentially much more targeted & spec

12:32PM Thu, March 01 2012

6ro656y723vvu6rkvgqd_normal @clintlalonde Victoria, BC, Canada

Yeah, ultimately the gov't has the potential to do much more harm 2 me with the info than Google. Or maybe I am living a delusion?
