The best photoshop alternative is definitely Gimp. The interface is different but it is equally as powerful once you learn it.

Gimp is a good open source Photoshop replacement and Inkscape for Illustrator.

the GIMP for a photoshop replacement, www.gimp.org For vector-based, there's a few to choose from, the best one I've come across is Inkscape www.inkscape.org
