X3 is a fantastic game, though it's not for everyone. X3: Albion Prelude is the most user-friendly in the series so far.

If you like space games like that, there's also Evochron Mercenaries. And Starshatter has been released for free recently.

Another recomendation would be Starfarer. It's still in alpha, but very fun and playable as of now.

Yes it is scary, and, if played back to back with Botanicula, it will make you crave the simplicity and boredom of reality.
