I have a friend that uses TaxiMagic and says it works well. Haven't used it myself.

TaxiMagic. I've used it for a couple of years. It's fantastic. The only downside is that the service isn't available everywhere.

if you are in the Bay Area or Seattle @uber is the only way to go. I imagine the other markets they serve are great as well
