Also: "Twelfth" is a weird word. It doesn't make sense. Who decided that the V should become an F? Does anyone pronounce the F before TH?

i'm finding it really difficult to pronounce the F in twelfth as anything other than an F. maybe it's an accent thing?

Thing is, I just outright skip the F and go straight to TH. The switch between F and TH feels too awkward.

i don't have a problem with the transition, i don't know what's different. it's like the "ft" in "left" but different

I'm pretty sure I've commented on this exact same word before. Also: "v" and "f" are the same sound, give or take voicing.

I was wrong, it wasn't the EXACT same word: https://t.co/FnScm1N5

FT is easy, the tongue doesn't get between teeth and lip while pronouncing F, unlike TH. Maybe it's just a "BIG TEETH" problem?

In Old English, f and v were not distinctive, both represented by "f", w/context determining pronunciation.

F: beginning & end of word and adjacent to f, s, th, p, t, c. V: elsewhere.

it's also why we have the pairs half/halve, thief/thieves, etc.

Huh! I never thought about half/halve etc. Maybe I'm seeing it as weird because Twelve/Twelfth works backwards in comparison.
