Tearing my hair out: "Why doesn't he just get back in the TARDIS?" How many writers, over how many decades ...
Maybe he's lost the key? And the ability to click his fingers...
East Berkshire, UK
maybe he should go back int the Tardis, head back in time, find Tom Baker and K9, and get them to solve it?
Can you just say it was a "fixed point" in time and unable to be rewritten?
because he's locked himself out? :)
LOGIC DOES NOT APPLY IN DOCTOR WHO. Obviously!
hahaha. because, of course, they've taken it away on a truck for inspection.
Maybe the TARDIS should be turned against him, GenieAladdin style.
Belfast, Northern Ireland
Pride would be the first thing that comes to mind. Or determination. Simple, stupid determination.
The Kennington Shore
Any story, any character, the answer to "why doesn't he..." is always the same. Because he won't, because he doesn't.
make them watch season 1 again, with the TARDIS broken, blocked or nicked every story.
maybe it's a 'deadlock seal'... or MAYBE it's superglue!
gaaaaaaahhhh!! (at least now we knoe 2 things: 1) HE's still a man 2) TARDIS is ok *phew*
Why? He wants to show how brilliant he is. He's The Doctor! Perfect character, there's ALWAYS a way out for him.
tell me all your writing secrets. at that point i'll just take over the show or something ha ha
If you boil a condom, you can stretch it over a phonebox. Maybe someone did that. Or is it letterbox? I can never remember.
Why? Because if he does, would be boring.
Ah but have you ever stood up in a packed cinema & shouted "just get in the bloody boat" whilst on a first date?
Oh, I have always thought the same whilst watching it.
He can't just get back in the TARDIS, because... he or it has shifted slightly out of phase, a la TNG episode The Next Phase
at least you have hair to pull out! Others arn't so fortunate!
cause he is nosy, stubborn and a bit selfish but that's why I love him, I'm the same you know
Accept it: most times you couldn't force him back in the TARDIS if he was on a big ACME elastic band tied to the console.
because hes the doctor man and id he did it would be a realllllly short ep :D
New Scotland, Canada
haha cause that would be too easy XD
easy.. transdimensional corridor between interior and exterior has its power drained by somethingXD
welcome to the great fan-rant of the Who community. Just ignore it, sir. It'll be easier that way.
...because it would be TOOO easy...
Can you write a part for me?!! #ifyoudontaskyoudontget xx
Maybe, one time he should, and see what happens.
You know who should get back in the TARDIS? WILF! :D
Have it get trapped behind some boulders - no one has EVER done that.
'cos then the episode would end very early? ;)
Keep going! If anyone can get it sorted, you can! :D *All inspired*
Because he lost the key? But then he could just click his fingers... You're just making life more difficult for yourself.
they don't have this trouble on Waterloo Road...
With all that space in there, there must be some secretive evil creature lurking. Not able to be detected. Just an idea...
You have no idea how the word TARDIS from you fills my heart with joy enough to fly me to Raxacoricofallapatorius and back!
becuase within the Doctor is a drive to make a difference. In many ways it is in all of us, nobody wants to be a nobody.
b/c sometimes its the wrong thing to do? Why does the Doc need a reason not to run away; couldn't he just help people 4 once?
that's one thing with the Time Lord I've never understood, he could always go back and change things but never does :s
you and I would RUN AWAY. The doctor is too curious to be a coward! :D. Or reckless...
You could do that for one episode though, and result in it causing more problems!!
Because the Doctor's nature is to investigate and explore, not run away hiding from reality.
He can't. Not to solve a problem in his own timeline. I think...
and I think Dalek Invasion of Earth was the last time we had a truly convincing answer.
because he's not us, any normal person would hide all day long in the Tardis but this is the DOCTOR.
Asking the same thing to myself while writting fanfictions... get back to the TARDIS !
maybe he's been neglecting her and she's angry.
He's lost the key? Someone else has it who betrays him? The TARDIS turns into cheese/throws a strop/auto-humanifies?
A useful avalanche? A broken spaceship? Surely it's usually one of them?
He can't, he's the Doctor.
I had the same question, but comic-based two days ago. Don't get me wrong, but I'm glad it's not just me...
near Birmingham, UK
Because he's too curious? ;)
This also explains th many ploys to get rid of the Tardis: locked behind a door, blasted off a ship, someone carts it off etc
busted fluid link. Stick with the classics.
because the TARDIS is full of killer coathangers and he has to wait for them to turn into their chrysallis stage: biros.
Maybe he lost his keys? If he leaves them lying around just anyone could get into a Tardis?
And there are only so many excuses - "Oh no, the TARDIS is gone!" It's been stolen/blocked off/fallen off a cliff, etc...
Think outside the box (pardon pun). Why wouldn't he? Knowing character & situation? Brainstorm what cd possibly keep him out?
NEW PLOT: DOCTOR ENTERS TARDIS. DALEK INSIDE. DALEK EXTERMINATES DOCTOR. DALEKS CONQUER TIME & SPACE #HAPPYENDING #DOCTORWHO
I'd love to see an episode entirely set in a locked down TARDIS.
THAT question. Keep doing what you have done so amazingly and ignore the people who can't understand a timespace concept
Hawaii, early 21st century
Someone split the fluid links on the Time Vector Generator, so it's basically just a Police Box at the moment. Why else? ;)
He's tried in grave situations, but generally, why would The Doctor run from something goning wrong? 174 laughed at the idea.
Pune, Maharashtra, India
Because they were all loved :p
or best of all manners. Marco Polo had that Tardis key for 6 months due to people not wanting to cause a fuss. Ahh the 60s
I'd love an adventure where someone gets lost in the TARDIS, or has been lost for years and years.
He could go back in the TARDIS but I doubt it would really solve the problem.
It all works so much better when the TARDIS is quirky and unreliable. Ability for accurate time-travel ruins most stories.
"doctor, why don't we get back in the tardis?"
"can't do that Pond (or companion of choice), I'm nosey!"
because he's curious. He wants to know what's going on and why. Good luck with it.
what if he does. Sometimes who plays God, let's them sort their own issues and fixes things in background ;)
And WHY do the Companions always wander off? And touch things they shouldn't #why ?
He suddenly develops claustrophobia. Or, in the Doctor's case, agoraphobia.
Could you ask them to start 'Strictly' a bit early? Then he can. Then he ALWAYS can...
LA, Calif, Earth, Solar System
Because he's that awesome... plain and simple ;)
just make him get back in, go into the future to see what happened
Chameleon circuit breakdown. He can't find it.
On a hill
because he's the doctor!!! And life wouldn't be so fun if he got back into the tardis now would it? Come along Pond!
East Berkshire, UK
Is Benedict Cumberbatch going to guest star in Dr Who (maybe even AS Sherlock?)
behind the 8 ball, usually...
He's eternally, OCD curious, at the risk of ignoring obvious danger. He can't deal with wondering what he'd miss out on.
On the M1 somewhere
So let him get back in the TARDIS. Just make something go horribly wrong when he gets in there :)
because the causal interface between the temporal buffers creates a reality island in the relativity matrix. Or just 'cos.
But wouldn't that be a great, terrifying story? If he *did* get back in the TARDIS? What then...?
Last line of episode: DOCTOR: "I keep forgetting that option." ?
Brilliant. We have same problem with Grandpa in my Pocket. "Why don't you just take your shrinking cap off you old fool!"
Bangor, North Wales
Maybe he can get back in the TARDIS, but drops something vital outside, and has to go back and get it?
couldn't you just chuck in the TARDIS is on a recharge scenario? (it must happen sometimes, right?)
If he bails, people die, evil wins and the BBC GOES BROKE!
Let him. They can use that one on Eurovision night. ;o)
It'll be ok, just take deep breathes. Although think of the money you'd save if he never left the TARDIS....
because it would be 45 minutes of him keeping the engine running. Bludgen any writer who foolishly fails to grasp this!
Perhaps he could lose the key?
Yeah that Doctor - running around saving the Galaxy - get in the Tardis mate - things have a way of working out- chill!
he's a stubborn aliens. How else will he react.
Basildon, Essex, United Kingdo
'cos he's mental. A mad man just won't stay in a box #BowTiesAreTheFirstSignOfMadness
Because there's a Sontaran with a really BIG gun in there?
Did he forget his key? Maybe he locked himself out in his dressing gown...?
ok shrinking cap off and I'm back in the TARDIS so why can I still not just shoot Bond?
Maybe you could combine the two problems? He doesn't get back in the Tardis because he's got his thinking cap on?
Or because some object is blocking the way? (destiny of the daleks, dalek invasion of earth)
he can't do that.. unless he goes 2 take his tie off + say something random.. but that generally doesn't help the story line much :)
Because although he runs away from danger he doesn't run away from problems. Also the show wouldn't be long enough if he did
Just throw a force field around it. It worked for the Keys of Marinus....
well he might be able to. It's science fiction, the rules always change
if he just went back in he wouldn't get to meddle. He wouldn't be able to cope with that :-)
like the Star Trek transporter problem. It's too much of a Deus Ex Machina, you have to figure new ways to block it.
He can't trust they won't follow him and take it for themselves?
Because he dropped the key into the Time Vortex. Oopsy-daisy.
The H.A.D.S.? Bring back the H.A.D.S.!
Falling masonry. Never fails. #Tardisdilemma
why not bring back the eternals. They were fun.
Have a rock block the door. It worked for many a Terry Nation script.
I believe in you. Also... BRING BACK SALLY SPARROW. (please?)
Isle of Wight, UK
I sympathise... but would still kill for your job! (Well, I'd be prepared to seriously maim.)
Burnley, Lancs, UK
maybe you should introduce a regular fault that means you have to evacuate the tardis immediately after landing?
Billie Piper: Why go there if it's so dangerous, Doctor?
Doc: Because we want to!!
Marlborough, New Hampshire
broken down; some1 in danger; gone invisible (again); fallen off a cliff; nicked by bandits; lost the key.
the TARDIS could be in a mood with him?
I'm always trying to bring back HADS in BF plays. I think I managed to use it in The Condemned.
because of his enduring sense of adventure?
Nine times out of ten it's curiosity or humanity, right? The man can't resist a mystery or a life-form in distress.
Because you're writing Sherlock today and not Doctor Who?:)
Has he locked his keys in the TARDIS yet? #keepingitsimple
do you need a helping hand? I'm not up to much today!
Well, yeah, but now that we know that Blinovitch was a Time Lord...
HA!(D.S.) Or just have it destroyed by a meteor shower. Aahh, but no old foes, so no tractators to rebuild it
But none so brilliantly surprising as you Steven. Now less hair tearing, more writing. Go have a cup of tea and biscuit.
Chewing gum in lock? Stink bombs let off by youths? Not that this is what we did to phone boxes in my youth of course.
Kinda made a rod for your own back there, after tossing aside the generally accepted excuse for the Xmas special... =P
...and how many viewers have asked that self-same question...?
Vampires of Venice teaser, one of funniest DW moments ever:-D
when he does get back into the TARDIS, maybe he should come to Australia ;)
Because he's not a coward Steven! If he just got back into the TARDIS and flew off he wouldn't be the Doctor!
wooden door barred shut from inside standing between dr and TARDIS? NB sonic doesn't work on wood, but Amy doesn't know yet x
because then I wouldn't be able to shout "just get in TARDIS!" at the TV!
because he is someone who must press the big red button that says do not press :-p
Never mind writers...how many FANS have said that over the years!? ;) Damned TARDIS..so easy, yet so difficult!
Writers AND viewers ask that question :-)
Methuen, MA 01844 USA
That's why it requires master writers to save him each/every time; kind of like "why doesn't she just call the police!!"
lmao. If he just got back in the TARDIS, it would make for one short episode.
Tell them, "It's not what the Doctor does. If that was the case the show wouldn't have been a hit so long."
Maybe the Doctor accidentally called the TARDIS fat and now it's upset and won't let him in?
Because he's part of events now and people can;t go back on their own timeline. Geeeeeez. Simple Time Travel 101 mechanics.
what would be the fun in that?love to see the tardis get clamped tho.....
Something should eat the TARDIS key :-) Good thing he didn't lose the key in a crack in the universe :-) I would have..
. Maybe it's time to update the Tardis. Maybe An IPhone or Android. Man walking into a phone booth is now seen as a loser
Just throw some lesbians in the story and there's your reason *joke*
Southern NJ, USA
its has disappeard. Whoever is is against has taken it. Maybe they've taken Amy and Rory? Maybe, uh, idk I'm not a writer...
Dwellings of Simplicity
Heads: It's buried under a rockfall. Tails: The mercury fluid links are playing up.
does he ever do what he's supposed to do?
He's the Doctor, if he could just get back in the TARDIS he would never have stolen it in the first place.
Just refer to any Terry Nation script and steal from it!
It'd be an awfully short story then, wouldn't it?
Because if he gets back into the TARDIS, there is no show! :)
if he did he wouldn't be the Doctor, now would he?
Tip it over so it's door-face down? Put a girder that needs an acetylene torch in front of it? Cover it in dangerous spores?
oh, so many of life's problems could be solved if we could all just get back in the tardis
The HADS made lots of sense for something that is indestructible anyway ...
Near beautiful Edinburgh
The H.A.D.S! I HAD forgotten all about the H.A.D.S! When did they stop using the H.A.D.S?
Toronto, Ontario. Canada
Where to even start? Who would say that?
.@steven_moffat and interestingly, when counted like this and in order of appearance, Douglas Adams turns out to be no. 42 (you're 79, btw)
because he hears the sound of crying children
he loses his key? down the back of a timey-wimey sofa?
I think The Doctor feels too responsible to the universe to get back into the TARDIS. Even when he should.
a little tougher than writing "Lesbian Inferno?" The TARDIS is not porn efficient. :)
Because it's not the TARDIS anymore... never been done as a cliffhanger, right?
You make no sence sometimes even though you're a writting genius. lol Amy (pond) loves you
Okanagan Valley, BC Canada
where would the fun be in that?
Have him get back in the TARDIS then, see what happens. The old box might surprise you.
I have SO wondered the SAME thing!? Sheesh! Can't they get Redoes or DoOvers? I mean Space/TimeLord-You'd think he could!
Mentioned it to Steven years ago ... Impressed at school when I found out he knew what it was. Soup with Krotons?
a day in the life of the doctor, steps out of the tardis, doesn't like it and then potters round the tardis for the day
He wouldn't be the Doctor if he just got back in the TARDIS. Lesser men just get back in the TARDIS.
Why not ask fans for ideas cus maybe ALOT of fans have ideas & maybe i do?I think that is be a good idea ask fansto email you
use the old crossed time lines/continuem dodge! That always works :)
it's like the rise of the mobile phone and the death of the phone booth. Or the advent of talkies.
The Book of Terry Nation says: 'Render TARDIS unsafe. Also, remember the limping mutant is actually a very amiable fellow.'
because of his unquenchable thirst for adventure, i suppose! Who wants to stay safe in the Tardis when there's adventure? ;)
Ever thought of providing a canonical answer one of these days? Maybe the TARDIS woulnd't let him? :)
if he just got back in the tardis there wouldn't be a show, now would it?
Cuz The Doctor has an insatiable curiousity, which many times works against his better judgement!
both have to consent, so either he doesn't want to, TARDIS doesn't want to, or they have the decision taken from them.
