I don't use them personally but I know @makeusabrew and @csswizardry made a slick app to make them more useful.

sure you could configure Alfred to do that for you with a custom hotkey (e.g. launch sublime, will focus if already open).

yup. In the main keyboard shortcuts pane in sys preferences. You can configure anything that has a menu in there.

however these issues can be overcome by tuning your stack related to your application type.

application servers load the entire environment into memory to quickly fork new child processes (2/2)

a variety of reasons. Ruby 1.8.X used to be quite bad with memory, 1.9.3 addresses a lot of issues, also, a lot of Rails (1/2)

the main flaw is that they failed to find a way to monetize it to the masses. Not many people see enough value to pay for it.
