Ah I see. Does ClockworkMod work on 2.1? Since ROM Manager basically is an automated ClockworkMod. You'll just need to do all the flashing commands manually with it.

Android does indeed have more free apps. Samsung even has their own App store and they have more free apps there as well. Plus there's 100+ from GetJar: http://mktg.getjar.com/getjargoldcatalogue.html#R1 (note: scroll sideways)

Apps will still need to occupy a small amount of space on the internal memory, and not all apps can be moved to the SD card. But of course moving what you can will help. I have an HTC Desire and my memory is 2MB smaller than yours. You pretty much will just have to put up with it. There are some root solutions to free up more memory, but aren't perfect.

Hmm for something dependable I'd go for recent units from Samsung, HTC and possibly Sony. In my opinion the most clean, stable and user-friendly Android skin out of the three is HTC's Sense UI. Just watch out for the app memory capacity because HTC tends to install very little. (Wildfire S and Chacha only has 150MB.)

E is EDGE, which is "slow 2G". W is unusual, possibly WCDMA, which is a form of 3G. You can also get H for HSDPA or just plain 3G. WCDMA, HSDPA, and 3G should be good. However EDGE is slow and should be avoided when possible. You can force your phone to connect only to 3G modes thru settings or a hidden code, depending on your phone. Here's our article about the code: http://www.thetechnoclast.com/2011/06/27/cherry-mobile-orbit-android-tipsspeed-up-angry-birds-force-3g-reset-app-drawer/
